Day 56 Report

Day 56 - 21/7/07 - First Day Down from Bourke

Steve's Report:Well, if it isn't log jams, man made barriers can cause some difficulties. It wasn't until I got around the weir that I realised that I probably could have slid the kayak down the dysfunctional fish ladder on the right side. Next weir I will check to the right first.

It was a late start today because I had to get ready for an overnight stop but I still managed more than 20km and the weir held me up for a while. I was pretty much at the limit of my strength to negotiate all of the rocks.
In the afternoon a flock of over 100 pelicans took of and flew over me. I got all excited but none of the photos were any good except may the one when they came back to fly around up high until I got off the river. The whoosh of wings and the grunting was really a magic moment.

I pulled up a bit earlier than I wanted to for the night because I found a patch of sand above the mud. Lucky I did because where I was headed for was pretty crappy. As you can see, where I was was good. Unfortunately I forgot about breakfast and to tell the truth I wasn't that fussed on my breakfast of peas and corn.

First warning sign I have seen on a weir.
Others were quite dangerous if you
couldn't hear the rush of water
On the way round the weir. I took the 10L
water bottle off after I took the photo
